About the Author

Steven Fawkes studied Science of Resources at the University of Birmingham from 1977 to 1980, specialising in energy resources.  From 1981 to 1984 he was at the University of Stirling where he completed one of the first PhDs in energy management.  This work was practically-based and developed new models of energy management, and made contributions to both the energy and innovation literature.  As a consultant he developed and implemented energy management programmes for many private and public sector clients including local authorities with large and diverse property portfolios.  He also helped develop the Audit Commission’s guide to energy management.  During this period Steven was also a director of a company building low-energy houses and co-founded one of the first wind farm development companies in the UK.

From 1995 to 2000 he worked for the EU Phare programme, the United Nations Development Programme, USAID and the World Bank implementing national energy efficiency programmes in Romania.  He also co-founded Energy-Serv S.A., one of the first Energy Service Companies in Romania.  In 2001 he became General Manager of RWE Solutions UK where he developed and implemented innovative energy services contracts with leading companies including Sainsbury’s and Diageo.  In 2005 RWE Solutions became the energy services arm of RWE npower and Steven became Head of Energy Solutions, responsible for managing the existing business and developing new energy services incorporating energy supply, energy efficiency and distributed generation.  In 2007 he joined Matrix Corporate Capital where he researches emerging energy companies.

Steven has published over 90 papers and articles, mostly on energy management and energy policy, including contributions to a text book on energy management published in 1988.  As well as being a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Energy Institute, Steven has also completed a Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Management at the University of Cambridge.

His hobbies include writing, flying and promoting space tourism.
